Oliver’s Dairy Bar & Grill, nestled on 490 Boston Post Rd in North Windham, CT, is a true gem for lovers of classic American fare and indulgent ice cream treats. This charming eatery perfectly blends a nostalgic roadside vibe with a warm, inviting atmosphere that keeps locals and travelers coming back time and again. Whether you’re craving a hearty meal or a sweet finish, Oliver’s promises a dining experience that delights all the senses.
The culinary heart of Oliver’s lies in its thoughtfully crafted menu, where traditional Americana dishes meet the kind of comfort food you crave after a long day. Picture biting into their homemade meatball grinder—where robust, tender meatballs are smothered in rich, savory sauce and hugged by crisp-toasted bread. Or savor the bold flavors of Italian sausage smothered with sautéed onions and peppers, a dish bursting with smoky, sweet, and spicy notes.
For those seeking lighter, yet equally satisfying options, the grilled shrimp salad offers a fresh contrast, brimming with vibrant textures and flavors. Classic favorites like chili dog fries, chicken fingers, and hot dog with fries remain staples, each prepared with care and attention to delivering that perfect balance of crisp, juicy, and flavorful.
Oliver’s also boasts a standout selection of homemade ice cream and desserts that elevate the meal into pure indulgence. From their luscious sundaes dripping with rich toppings to the unique toasted coconut ice cream and freshly baked coffee cake or scones, every bite is a celebration of sweet comfort. The clams fritters and lobster roll provide a delightful taste of New England’s coastal heritage, adding another layer of local authenticity to the menu.
The ambiance here is undeniably a highlight. Scott P. praised the facility’s “club” vibe and live music, suggesting it’s not only a daytime treat but also a perfect setting for weekend evenings filled with good food and great company. The country atmosphere is enhanced by attentive, friendly staff who genuinely make every guest feel welcome, as noted by recurring visitors like Tara Hendrix. It’s the kind of place that warmly embraces you like an old friend, making meals feel like a special occasion without pretense.
While the pricing may be slightly above some roadside alternatives, as noted by Scott P., the quality and freshness clearly justify the extra few dollars. Real customer experiences highlight a few variances—the meatball grinder’s bread can be a bit firm at the edges, and some fries didn’t hit the mark for one reviewer. Yet, the majority emphasize flavorful dishes and exceptional service. Bill Dunphy sums it up perfectly, calling Oliver’s “a great find” with “awesome” food that’s worth avoiding the highway for.
Whether you’re pulling in for a quick, satisfying burger and soda after some local sightseeing or settling in for an unforgettable dinner enhanced by live music and friendly chatter, Oliver’s Dairy Bar & Grill embodies the best of American roadside dining. It’s a welcoming stop filled with hearty, vibrant flavors and sweet, nostalgic treats that capture the heart of Connecticut’s food scene.
Tuesdays have become my day to try new (to me) roadside eateries. Today was Oliver's. Oliver's definitely had the nicest facility. It offers live music and a "club" vibe. Probably a nice weekend evening experience. As far as my lunch, I had a good-sized burger and opted for the family-size fries. Add the soda, and my meal came to $20 and change. A bit more than comparable options, but delicious and a great place to eat! If you are in the area, I highly recommend it.
Tried to go here on the 4th of July with a group of people and this year they were closed, but every other time I've been there the food and service has been quite nice. I enjoy the country atmosphere and the service is exceptional. Their ice cream is fantastic. If you need a quick bite of food while in the area, and you are in the mood for American, be sure to stop by for a delicious burger and shake.
This is a takeout review. All food is eaten promptly in the vehicle. I ordered the meatball grinder, chili, fries, and cole slaw. The chili was good, very thick and a nice flavor. The meatball grinder was OK, the bread was quite hard at ashe edges because of the toasting. The cole slaw was also OK. The fries left me disappointed. Just not much about them that I liked. On a scale from 0-10 I would rate this 7.4.
I've been going here for at least 5 years. The food just keeps getting better. Very fresh and the best fried clam strips and chicken strips I've ever had. Staff is always courteous and friendly. If you want great food, this is the place
Great find on Rte 6 and avoiding the Highway. The food was awesome. The grill shrimp on the salad was fresh and tasty. The meatball grinder was a treat. I haven't had one in years. Be sure to stop by
If you’re looking for great food and ice cream, look no further! Oliver’s Dairy Bar & Grill did not disappoint. I was visiting from out of state and was very impressed with the food, service, atmosphere and overall experience. The owner, Cindy, greeted me with a warm smile and held a conversation as if she’s known me forever. I love how personable she is! All of the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. They went above and beyond to make sure I had a great first experience here. I ordered a variety of food during my visit. Pictured is the maple bacon cheddar burger with onion rings, grandma’s potato salad, baked beans, coleslaw, and clam strips with homemade tartar sauce. I ended my evening with an enormous classic banana split. Literally everything was very tasty. You can taste the freshness almost immediately. I enjoyed watching a live band while enjoying a delicious meal with good company. I could not have asked for a better experience. I highly recommend that you stop by and give Oliver’s a try! You will not be disappointed. Thank you so much Cindy and staff! I can’t wait to visit again soon.
We had the pleasure of eating there when they had live music. My granddaughter loves the playscape. The outdoor dining reminds me of 1960's vintage drive-ins. The mosquitoes can be an issue at dusk so you may want to visit before that.
Great experience! I had the Italian sausage sandwich and the wife had chicken salad sandwich. Both were delicious. There was a little wait while the food was prepared, but that is expected when each meal is meticulously prepared. Onion rings were GREAT! About 15 flavors of very delicious ice cream. Highly recommend! Coffee ice cream cone and caramel sundae
